Welcome to The Healing and Peace Show with Thomas Schmierer, LMFT and the Healing and Peace Blog: Your Catholic Guides Through the Trials of Life! I hope that you will find this blog to be a no-nonsense resource that tackles the toughest problems in your life, providing information and solutions briefly and clearly. You will not find fluff-pieces on this site. The internet has enough noise already.
This blog is for you! Tell me what you want me to write about and I’ll endeavor to do that for you. If you are going to spend your valuable time asking me a question, make sure to ask about the biggest problem in your life, even if your biggest problem happens to be a relatively small one. If your problem is big for you, then I’m likely to see it as worthy of its own article. It is my hope that this blog will help you understand how to experience deep personal and relational healing so that you can live out your unique vocation to love with ever greater peace, holiness, and joy.
You may submit article ideas and requests by clicking on “Contact” on the top-level menu above. Don’t worry, we respect your privacy and your identity will not be revealed in any of my articles unless you give explicit consent. Why do I care about you enough to write articles addressing your problems?
- I believe that you are created in the image and likeness of God: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Cf. Gen 1:27). This means that even before meeting you, I am predisposed to being in awe of you and your goodness.
- Your problem isn’t always as unique as you might think it is. If I adequately address your problem in an article, then others who are struggling with the same thing can often be helped too.
- I have received a lot and that makes me want to give back. I have been given much kindness, generosity, love, and warmth from the important people in my life. I don’t want to hoard what was given to me and I take pleasure in giving to others.
Why should you listen to me? What makes me credible?
I have four main areas of expertise that, by the grace of God, I hope make me a credible Catholic guide in spite of whatever limitations I may have:
- I am business-minded, meaning that I have a logical, organized, practical approach to problem-solving. My undergraduate degree was in Business with a concentration in Management Information Systems. For ten years, I helped to build business enterprise applications for many different companies, including Oceanspray Cranberries, Kohler, and S.C. Johnson Wax.
- I am a licensed marriage and family therapist who treats individuals, couples, & families. Therapy is my second career and I have been doing it since 2008. I use the top faith and evidence-based therapies and I know what it takes to positively transform your personal lives and your relationships. I help clients to experience deep personal and relational healing, that is, I help them to change from the inside out rather than teaching them how to “fake it”. You’ll see this inside out emphasis in my articles here.
- I am a faithful Catholic who is educated in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. I graduated summa cum laude from Holy Apostles College, Cromwell, CT, with an M.A. in Moral Theology in early in 2009. I have found that my education in moral theology has been essential to helping me to sift the wheat from the chaff in psychological literature. Therapists without an adequate education in the faith are notorious for having baffling morality. For example, I attended a Board meeting for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) where they voted to send a letter to a politician recommending physician-assisted suicide. As someone who is pro-life from the cradle to the grave, I find it appalling that any profession would support premature death, much less a profession that I would think should try to persuade clients to not commit suicide. You won’t find real happiness from the average therapist; you need a guide with a moral compass that works. I vow to do my best to never steer you towards evil and to do what I can to keep you on the path of life, both earthly and eternal.
- I have relevant education and experience conducive to writing well. In my undergraduate studies, I took a lot of English courses because I have a passion for writing. In addition, I wrote dating advice articles for CatholicSingles.com for a couple of years. While I am in constant need of honing my craft, I have significant experience writing articles to support Catholic folk, just like you. I’d also like to give due praise to my editor, who is the best and most beautiful editor in the world (and an excellent artist too)! If you haven’t guessed, I’m married to her.
There is a lot more that I could tell you about myself and my relevant interests and experience, but this should be enough for now. To learn a little bit more about me, you may wish to visit my author page here or ThomasSchmierer.com, where I either host or plan to host a blog on theological and philosophical matters like St. Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
